Staff Applied AI Engineer

About the role

Deriv is looking for a Staff Applied AI Engineer in Cyberjaya to lead the technical implementation of its next generation of agentic systems. The role focuses on making AI work reliably in production, handling coordination problems such as latency spikes, model hallucinations and scale, rather than building prototypes. Deriv's AI already resolves more than 65% of customer enquiries, writes and reviews code and processes invoices.

Key responsibilities

• Architect scalable solutions by breaking ambiguous, function-wide problems into shippable technical architectures.
• Own the outcome of features, ensuring they solve the business problem and monitoring them from deployment through to adoption.
• Elevate engineering standards by reviewing code and design documents and documenting knowledge.
• Bridge the gap between engineering, compliance and operations, translating conflicting priorities into agreed architecture.
• Balance quality and speed, making strategic calls on technical debt versus shipping speed.

Required profile

• 7+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 3 years building production AI systems that handle real traffic at scale.
• Experience shipping production AI, not just notebooks or demos.
• Comfortable working across paradigms and leading through uncertainty by facilitating problem-solving discussions.
• Systems thinking: seeing structural flaws behind symptoms and optimising how the organisation solves problems.

Required skills

• Languages: Python and TypeScript.
• AI/ML: OpenAI APIs, Anthropic APIs, LangGraph, custom ML pipelines.
• Infrastructure: AWS, PostgreSQL, Redis, Docker, LangFuse, vector databases and graph databases.
• SQL and prompt engineering.
