Software Engineering Manager

About the role

Grab, Southeast Asia's leading superapp, is looking for a strategic Software Engineering Manager to join its growing technology team in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, reporting to the Head of Engineering. The role sits within Automation and Platform Excellence (APEX), a platform engineering team that enables a frictionless ecosystem so engineers can focus on value-adding features for users. You will lead a team of engineers, drive technical excellence and business impact, and shape the technical direction of the organization.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and mentor engineers across experience levels and specializations, fostering a collaborative and innovative culture
• Take part in code and design reviews to maintain high development standards
• Partner with product, design and analytics leaders to build customer-focused roadmaps and define success metrics
• Develop and communicate the engineering strategy and key results, focusing on testability, availability, security and code quality
• Run quarterly planning sessions and build detailed execution plans for product and engineering roadmaps
• Recruit, retain and develop career paths for top engineering talent, and manage staffing levels against business needs
• Translate complex technical concepts for executives and bridge engineering teams with business partners
• Set performance metrics, run regular performance reviews and solve technical and organizational challenges

Required profile

• 10+ years of software engineering experience
• 5+ years of direct people management of junior to lead-level engineers
• Demonstrated experience building and scaling complex engineering organizations
• Experience managing high-scale, mission-critical systems with modern development practices and AI-assisted tooling
• Experience developing product roadmaps and defining customer-focused metrics
• Familiarity with budget management, industry benchmarking and competitive analysis

Required skills

• Advanced expertise in distributed systems, including high availability, performance optimization and reliability engineering
• Strong expertise in code and design review processes
• Ability to manage full accountability for platform systems serving multiple products
