Senior Country Economist

About the role

The Senior Country Economist will support UNDP’s mission in Malaysia by providing high‑level economic and policy advice to the Resident Representative, Deputy Resident Representative and programme teams. The role bridges country‑level work with regional and global networks, contributing to the acceleration of Sustainable Development Goals.

Key responsibilities

• Advise UNDP Country Office management on evidence‑based programme development, including the preparation of the Country Programme Document and thematic portfolios.
• Lead macro‑economic, sectoral and political‑economy analysis, producing periodic outlooks and strategic policy recommendations.
• Oversee the development of the National Human Development Report and the Development Finance Assessment, ensuring data‑driven insights inform decision‑making.
• Supervise consultants and manage people‑management competencies within the economics and policy function.
• Coordinate with the Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific and the Global Policy Network to align country work with regional strategies.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in economic analysis, development policy and public‑sector advisory roles.
• Proven leadership and people‑management skills, with the ability to supervise consultants and multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong understanding of SDG integration, financing mechanisms and development finance.
• Ability to translate complex economic data into actionable programme concepts and policy advice.
