Legal Protection Officer

About the role

The AAM Legal Protection team at Asylum Access provides legal aid to refugee clients in Malaysia, offering individualized assistance, community outreach, and advocacy to improve access to rights.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct client screening, provide legal advice on UNHCR processes, accompany clients to authorities, and draft legal briefs and referrals.
• Develop and deliver workshops, update outreach materials, and disseminate accurate information on protection issues to refugee communities.
• Support strategy design, contribute to advocacy initiatives, manage case records, and assist the Head of Legal Protection with training and administrative duties.

Required profile

• University degree in Law with knowledge of Malaysian domestic laws, especially arrest and detention procedures.
• At least two years of direct experience in refugee protection and familiarity with the UNHCR process in Malaysia.
• Professional fluency in English and Malay (both oral and written).
• Strong legal research, writing, analytical, planning and organisational skills.
